Chapter 3

I like these samples - ideas for the future?

My "synthetic" felt turned out to have a pecentage of wool in it so wouldn't burn.  I worked these samples on sheers instead.
The Greek Key stitch in a varigated thread worked well and would make an interesting background fabric.

The sari yarn is bright and colourful, ideal for the carousel horse ideas.

I bought the tassled yarn ages ago and not found a use for it until now.   It fits the carousel horse idea.

I am not a lover of white with a colour but I think the red/white samples turned out well.

I should have added stitching to the print, but the border is an idea for the future.

I thought the samples would be  flattened by the scanner lid so I too photos too.  As I like using Wiremash, garden wire has distinct possibilities!!

The illlustration does not show how horrible  this  fabric is.  It looks good here.  I might use it again!!

The toy sewing machine makes straight stitch on top and chain stitch underneath.  This was used to work the blue sample on p13.

My machine does several types of buttonhole and has a special foot to remember the size and make all the other buttonholes the same as the first.  This seemed to have a mind of its own and I gave up with it and worked the buttonholes manually, marking them out in the traditional way.

I think I stretched the fabric too much and the edges rolled.  Perhaps double fabric would work better.

Chapter 1 More research

I added the yellow I missed to the stitched background and I think it looks much better.

I pianted the drawings based on the original images as I plan to use them for ideas in Chapters3 & 4.  I like the combninations of bright colours and lots of gold

Module Three Chapter 2

PLAIN EDGES
I have based the cut shape samples on 1950's designs from my research.

Straight Cut Edges
Based on ther sketch on p11.  I made two blocks to print the green  triangles onto a white cotton fabric and painted only the edge of the blocks for the black outlines. Then the stars were free machined The pink cotton triangles are outlined using a twin needle .

Based on the central design on p10.  Pale blue and jade green Georgette snippets sandwiched between layers of pale apricot.  Sheer red shapes applied using zig-zag stitch length 7 and width 4.  The width was reduced to 1.6 to work the narrower corners.  I used an extra layer of sheer to enable the slightly sticky surface to pass under the foot.  This was cut away afterwards but soluble film would have been easier and perhaps mort effective.

Curved Edges
Bond-A-Web painted with red, yellow and orange silk paints on orange satin and stitched with red straight  stitch rows of differing widths.  Red silk shapes stitched with two rows, using one needle.  I think this was easier that using the twin needle and definitely easier to thread!

Angelina fibres ironed onto black felt and Bond-A_Web.  The gold fabric was zig=zad=gged in place using a metallic thread .  Stitch length 0.7, Width 4.  I really like  Angelina but it gets everywhere.

Torn and Frayed Edges

Fabric.
Purle/red lining fabric on pelmet V ilene stitched with pattern 159 at stitch length 3.0 using dark magenta thread.  I torn strips of silk Dupion and it frayed itself.  The strips were secured with the same stitch pattern as the background using a magenta thread.

Torn Paper.
I used the backin paper from the painted webbing piece in Chapter 1.  A grid of pale, medium and dark purple was stitched onto a quilting cotton fabric backed with medium Vilene.  The paper was stitched into place using the lines of the grid and matching colours.

Module Three Chapter 1

 Stitched Backgrounds

A 1950s scarf used as the source for the stitched background

Colours selected- watercolour pencils.  Some of the colours were achieved by mixing.

Design in pencils

The stitched sample on satin.  The colours were chosen for their similarity to the pencils but of course ironed out to a much brighter, different colour.   Oops!!!  I  didn't use any yellow!!

Another idea on silk Dupion backed with Pelmet Vilene, based on the drawing (top centre) on page 9.   Double rows of stitch pattern 132  in a variagated cotton thread alternated with tubular cotton kniting tape.  The tape was then stitched at right angles across the piece

Automatic Patterns
on silk Dupion on medium Calico backing.

Fabric Backgrounds.
I used some of the trimmings left over from Chapter two 3D sample on Calico.  I think I overdid the heat gun!!

Sheer snippets betwen polyseter chiffon, top layer blue, under layer jade green.

Black snippets on felt

and gold snippets on apricot felt.

Angelina

Painted fusible webbing on quilting fabric.   The paper backing was interesting too and could be uesed in Chapter 2

Printed and stitched.
The design for the block was taken from the tree on page 4 and printed onto a quilting fabric.

A design of circles made on the computer and printed onto transfer paper.  The paper was cut into strips, rearranged and ironed onto Calico.  The piece was covered with a jade green sheer and stitched in rows.

Rarranged fabrics from a previous experiment.  patchwork pieces joined togethe then cut up, rearranged and re assembled.  This was done several times.
Sheer fabrics bonded to blue felt and stitched with automatic patterns.  the piece was cut up and rearrranged, then the pieces joined together.

Silk and wool fibres needle felted onto cream wool  and machine patterns added.
