Chapter 6

Applique samples

Bond and Stitch

Design based on part of a bird house and worked in toning fabrics.  They are stitched with an automatic oattern which resembles Blanket Stitch

Raised Applique

Each layer is padded but the top layer is slightly thicker than the other two.  The strips at the top should have been placed slightly further away.

 Free standing motifs

Based on the bird border.  the top and middle birds have padded bodies.  The larger diamonds are a little too far away from the birds.

Resolved Sample

Rough sketches of ideas

I tried a couple of ideas with paper shapes on the fabrics to help decide what would work best

Egg clusters on the egg resist

Angular birds on Birdhouse resist, which seems to have more movement. and the angles of the birds echo the shapes of the birdhouses.

Finished sample using fabrics coloured with Brusho sprays.  The yellow didn't look quite right so this was free stitched with a bright green to change the colour slightly add add more texture.

The turquoise birds are padded and the bright pinky purple are padded and free standing.  they are stitched with a 30s varigated thread and were manipulated when attached to raise the shapes further .
The small birds top left are all free but the bottom yellow one is manipulated to raise the thers a little.
